Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David, 1894-1972. King Edward VIII, 1936; Duke of Windsor, 1936-1972. Program for the St. David's Day Dinner at the Royal Victoria Hotel in Nassau on March 1, 1944. The Duke has boldly signed “Edward" and added his title, “Governor,” as governor of the Bahamas, below his signature.
This menu is from the 1944 St. David's Day Dinner in Nassau. St. David, or “Dewi Sant,” as he is known in the Welsh language, is the patron saint of Wales. He lived in the 6th century and during his life he was a Celtic monk and archbishop, and he was one of the many early saints who helped to spread Christianity among the pagan Celtic tribes of western Britain. St. David's Day, as celebrated today on March 1 (the day of his death in 589), dates back to 1120, when Dewi was canonized by Pope Callactus II and March 1 was included in the church calendar.
Edward has signed boldly in blue ink on the back cover of the program. His signature and title are 4" long. The program is also signed by R. C. Field, a group captain in the Royal Air Force who participated in the dinner program, but his signature could be matted out if the piece were framed. Fine condition.
